How Medical Marijuana Works in Florida
Medical marijuana in Florida is not a casual recommendation, and it is not something a patient simply buys because he or she thinks it may help. Florida has a regulated medical marijuana program supervised by the Florida Department of Health Office of Medical Marijuana Use. A patient must have a qualifying medical condition, must be evaluated by a qualified physician, must be entered into the Florida Medical Marijuana Use Registry, and must obtain a Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card before legally purchasing medical marijuana from a licensed Florida Medical Marijuana Treatment Center.
At Southside Medical Center, we do not treat medical marijuana as a miracle cure, a shortcut, or a substitute for good medical care. We treat it as one possible medical tool that may help selected patients when it is legally appropriate and medically reasonable. Like any treatment, it must be considered carefully. The physician must review the patient’s history, diagnosis, current medications, risks, possible benefits, and the reason the patient is seeking this option.
Medical marijuana works through the body’s endocannabinoid system, a natural signaling system involved in pain, appetite, sleep, mood, inflammation, and other body functions. Cannabis contains active compounds called cannabinoids.
The two best known are THC and CBD. THC may help some patients with symptoms such as pain, nausea, appetite loss, muscle spasm, or sleep difficulty, but it can also cause impairment, dizziness, anxiety, sedation, or other side effects. CBD does not usually cause the same “high” associated with THC, but it can still affect the body and may interact with medications. That is why medical supervision matters.
Florida law allows qualified physicians to certify appropriate patients for medical marijuana when the patient has a qualifying condition such as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, PTSD, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, certain terminal conditions, certain comparable conditions, or chronic nonmalignant pain connected to a qualifying medical condition. The physician must determine that the potential benefit is reasonable compared with the possible risks. The patient must also complete the required informed consent process.
We chose to offer medical marijuana certification because many patients come to us after years of struggling with chronic symptoms that have not responded well enough to conventional treatment. Some have pain that has changed their daily life. Some have difficulty sleeping because of a medical condition. Some have nausea, poor appetite, muscle spasm, PTSD symptoms, or other qualifying problems. In appropriate cases, medical marijuana may give these patients another lawful option to discuss with a physician who knows medicine, understands risk, and does not treat the process like a rubber stamp.
We also chose to offer this service because we believe patients deserve honest guidance. Medical marijuana should not be surrounded by mystery, embarrassment, exaggerated promises, or fear. Patients should understand what Florida law requires, what medical marijuana may help, what it may not help, and what precautions must be followed. It is not right for everyone. It should not be used before driving or operating dangerous equipment. It may not be appropriate for certain patients, including some patients with pregnancy, severe psychiatric illness, substance-use risk, medication interactions, or other medical concerns.
Our goal is simple: careful evaluation, legal compliance, patient education, and responsible medical judgment.
